Japanese Scholarships for US College Soccer

Can Japanese scholarships stack on US college soccer aid? JASSO's ¥352,000/month award, the Yanai Foundation list, NCAA cost-of-attendance caps and timing.

Short answer: a Japanese grant-type (no repayment) scholarship such as JASSO's degree-seeking undergraduate scholarship (海外留学支援制度・学部学位取得型) can usually sit on top of a partial U.S. athletic scholarship. JASSO's guidelines allow it to be combined with other scholarships, and the U.S. monthly rate is ¥352,000 (2026 actual). The limit comes from the U.S. side: under NCAA rules a student-athlete's total aid can't exceed the school's cost of attendance, and if it would, the school must cut its own aid. Timing matters too. You apply to JASSO in September of your final year of high school (高3) and must list your target universities then, so the scholarship calendar starts before most recruiting decisions. The 2027 cycle is already closed, so this guide is for families aiming at fall 2028. This is general information as of October 2026, not personal legal, immigration or tax advice. Always confirm with the scholarship provider and with your university's compliance and financial aid offices.

For the full picture of playing college soccer in the U.S., see our U.S. college soccer guide. This post is for Japanese families whose athletic offer is partial, say half of tuition, and who want to close the gap with a Japanese scholarship that doesn't have to be repaid. The goal isn't the most famous school that offers money. It's the school whose academics, soccer and budget all fit your family: fit, not name.

The answer in three lines

Start with these three points.

1JASSO's degree-seeking scholarship can be combined with other scholarships, unless the other provider forbids itJASSO 2027 application guidelines, "combining with other scholarships"
2Under NCAA rules, total aid can't exceed cost of attendance; any excess means the school reduces its aidNCAA Division I Bylaws 15.1 and 15.1.3
3You apply in September of 高3 and name your 1st–8th choice universities at that pointJASSO 2027 guidelines and supplementary Q&A

Why this matters for soccer families

Full scholarships covering tuition, housing and food are the exception in U.S. college soccer. Most offers are partial. Our college soccer scholarship reality check explains what offers really look like and how to read them.

With a partial offer, the family pays the rest, and that's where a Japanese grant-type scholarship comes in. Most "study abroad scholarship" lists online never mention athletic aid, so they don't explain how the two fit together. This guide focuses on exactly that: the stacking rules and the timing.

JASSO's degree-seeking scholarship at a glance

JASSO's undergraduate degree-seeking program is a government-funded, no-repayment scholarship for students who plan to earn a bachelor's degree at a university outside Japan. Key points from the 2027 application guidelines:

ItemDetails (2027 guidelines)
Monthly amountCategory A (U.S., Canada, UK, Singapore): ¥352,000 (2026 actual)
Rough annual valueAbout ¥4.22 million (12 months; may change with the government budget)
Travel grant¥10,000 for new recipients
Tuition paymentNone separately; you can use the money for study-related costs as you see fit
Support periodFour years in principle; extensions generally not allowed
How it's paidMonthly in yen to your own Japanese bank account, after enrollment is confirmed
Number of awardsNot fixed (for reference, 140 in 2026)
EnglishTOEFL iBT 4.0 or higher (tests from January 21, 2026), 80 or higher (earlier tests), or IELTS 6.0
GradesHigh school average (評定平均) of 3.7 or higher on a 5-point scale
Household incomeCombined income of the people supporting the student of ¥20 million or less (2025 income for the 2027 cycle)
OtherJapanese national or permanent resident, living in Japan when applying, no previous university enrollment, within three years of high school graduation, and more
ObligationsMonthly study reports, grades every term, and an annual follow-up survey for five years after the award ends

Because the money is paid in yen, its dollar value depends on the exchange rate. JASSO's Q&A also says the monthly amount can change with each year's government budget.

Three conditions that matter for soccer players

First, the community college route doesn't qualify. The guidelines exclude students who start at a junior or community college and then transfer to a four-year university for the bachelor's degree. If you're planning a JUCO-first path, JASSO isn't an option.

Second, transferring during the award is not allowed in principle. Changing universities counts as a change to your study plan, which JASSO generally doesn't permit. Some players move schools through the transfer portal. If you hold a JASSO award, a transfer could put the scholarship at risk.

Third, your admission must be unconditional. You can apply before you're admitted, but you need an unconditional offer from the university before support starts. A conditional offer that depends on finishing an English course isn't enough.

A calendar for a fall 2028 player

A player starting college in fall 2028 is in 高2 (second year of high school) as of October 2026. The 2027 JASSO cycle closed in September 2026, so the next chance is the 2028 cycle. Dates from 2027 onward in this table are estimates based on the 2027 cycle. Confirm them in JASSO's 2028 guidelines when they're published.

WhenSchool yearWhat to do
Oct 2026–Mar 2027高2 autumn–winterStart TOEFL (aim for iBT 4.0) or IELTS (6.0). Keep your 評定 at 3.7+. Start recruiting video and coach outreach
Apr–Jun 2027高3 springAsk your school and prefectural board of education about the prefectural nomination track. Narrow your list to eight universities
Around Jul 2027高3 summer2028 guidelines expected (the 2027 ones came out July 16). Yanai Foundation "reserved" (予約型) track window (July 16–August 10 in 2026)
Sep 2027高3 SeptemberJASSO entry (September 1–24 in the 2027 cycle). List your 1st–8th choice universities and study plan
Early Oct 2027高3 autumnDeadline for documents and the school's recommendation (October 1 in the 2027 cycle)
Autumn–winter 2027高3University applications, conversations with coaches, athletic offers
Jan 2028高3 winterPaper screening result (early January), interview (end of January)
Mar 2028GraduationFinal result (early March). High school graduation
Mar–Jun 2028After graduationUnconditional admission, athletics aid agreement, I-20
Aug 2028StartJASSO payments begin in the month your bachelor's classes start

Line this up with your recruiting timeline. Your JASSO list is fixed in September, but soccer offers often come later. So put the schools that are realistically recruiting you in your 1st–4th choices in September. JASSO's Q&A says even a switch to your 5th–8th choice isn't automatic and requires a fresh review.

The prefectural nomination track

Under the prefectural nomination track (都道府県推薦枠), each prefecture selects one student and nominates them to JASSO. You can apply through this track and the regular track at the same time. It's for students currently enrolled in high school who expect to graduate the following March.

Each prefecture runs its own intake and selection, so deadlines and documents differ. In the 2027 cycle, prefectures had to send their nominations to JASSO by October 1, 2026, which means prefectural selection happened earlier. Start asking your school and board of education in the spring of 高3.

The Yanai Tadashi Foundation: big money, fixed school list

For U.S. universities, the Yanai Tadashi Foundation scholarship pays up to US$115,000 a year for four years in principle, with no repayment. That's up to $100,000 a year for tuition, housing and insurance (insurance capped at $6,000), plus a separate $15,000 a year for study and living support. There's a school-nominated "reserved" track (予約型) and a post-admission track (合格型), each with about 20 awards a year.

The catch: it only pays at a fixed list of universities. For fall 2027 entry the list covers 30 U.S. universities and 18 liberal arts colleges (plus seven in the UK). From a soccer point of view:

GroupExamples on the listAthletic aid?
NCAA Division I (non-Ivy)Duke, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, Northwestern, Michigan, Washington, Colgate, Davidson (men's and women's) / Vanderbilt, Rice, Texas, Illinois (women's only)Yes
Ivy LeagueBrown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, YaleNo
NCAA Division IIIMIT, Chicago, Johns Hopkins, WashU, Carnegie Mellon, NYU, Williams, Amherst, Middlebury and othersNo

Which schools sponsor men's or women's soccer reflects general information as of October 2026. Check each school's athletics site. Some list schools, such as Georgia Tech, have no varsity soccer.

The Ivy League doesn't give athletic scholarships; aid is need-based. See Ivy League college soccer for Japanese players for how that works.

Other Yanai Foundation points to know:

  • It generally can't be combined with other Japanese grant-type scholarships. Exceptions include scholarships from the national government or local authorities, loans, and grants from outside Japan. JASSO is government-funded, but ask the foundation directly whether it falls under that exception.
  • The foundation calculates the cost at each university and pays against it. Ask both the foundation and the university how athletic aid that covers the same costs would be handled.
  • Transferring to another university requires talking to the foundation first, and the foundation decides whether the award continues.
  • The reserved track for fall 2027 closed on August 10, 2026, and the post-admission track was scheduled to open around December 2026. Check the latest guidelines for fall 2028 dates.
  • Benchmarks include TOEFL iBT 90 (or 4.5) or IELTS 6.5 and SAT 1400, and household income must be ¥27 million or less.

Stacking rules: cost of attendance is the ceiling

In NCAA Division I, a student-athlete whose total financial aid exceeds the school's cost of attendance is ineligible to compete (Bylaw 15.1). That total includes government grants and outside scholarships, not just the school's own aid (Bylaw 15.1.2). The House settlement changes took effect on July 1, 2025, and the 2026-27 Division I Manual still contains this ceiling.

If the total would go over, the school must reduce its own aid to bring you back under the limit (Bylaw 15.1.3). The school decides which aid to cut, and it could be the athletic scholarship. This is sometimes called "award displacement."

Example

These numbers are made up for illustration.

ItemExample amount
Cost of attendance (international student)$70,000
Athletic scholarship$35,000
JASSO (about ¥4.22 million a year at an assumed ¥150 per dollar)About $28,000
TotalAbout $63,000 (under the ceiling)

Here the total stays below cost of attendance, so nothing is reduced. With a bigger athletic award, or another scholarship on top, you could go over.

How the divisions differ

  • Division I: Aid awarded solely on bases unrelated to athletic ability, like JASSO, is a permitted outside source (Bylaw 15.01.1-(b)). At schools that opted into the House settlement, sport-by-sport scholarship limits were replaced by roster limits.
  • Division II: Team-wide scholarship limits (equivalency) still apply. Outside aid unrelated to athletics is permitted, but ask how it's treated against the team limit.
  • NAIA and NJCAA: Each association has its own rules.

In every division, some outside aid must be reported to the compliance and financial aid offices. Once you're awarded a scholarship, tell the school in writing and confirm how it's treated.

Can I combine these?

CombinationVerdict
JASSO + athletic scholarshipYes, within cost of attendance; report it to the school
JASSO + university academic scholarshipYes, same conditions
JASSO + JASSO overseas loan (第二種・海外)Yes, per JASSO's guidelines
Yanai + athletic scholarshipAsk first (foundation's cost calculation and the school's ceiling)
Yanai + JASSOAsk first (whether JASSO counts as a government exception)
Yanai + private Japanese grant-type scholarshipNo (foundation's eligibility rules)

How it changes your I-20 and your offer comparison

A JASSO award can change how much money your family needs to show. To issue an I-20, the school needs proof that your first year is funded. Whether a JASSO award letter counts as evidence varies by school, so ask the international student office. Our guide to I-20 financial proof with athletic aid explains the basics.

When comparing offers, try this: athletic aid + Japanese scholarship − cost of attendance = family share. But JASSO results arrive in early March, and a coach may want an answer before then. Make sure each option still works for your family without JASSO.

One line on tax

The housing and food portion of a U.S. university scholarship is taxable, and a scholarship paid from Japan may be treated differently. See athletic scholarship taxes for F-1 players and confirm with a tax professional.

FAQ

Q. Can I apply to JASSO after committing to a school? A. You can apply without an admission offer (JASSO Q&A). But the application is in September of 高3 and you list your target universities then. If the school you commit to isn't on your list, you may not be supported. If you've already enrolled at a university, you can't apply.

Q. Does my soccer record count? A. JASSO isn't an athletic scholarship. It looks at your study plan, grades and English. You can explain how soccer fits your study plan, but results on the field don't decide the outcome.

Q. What if I go to a JUCO first? A. JASSO's degree-seeking program excludes routes that start at a community college and transfer to a four-year school. If you're considering JUCO, plan your finances without this scholarship.

Q. Can I take a year to focus on soccer after high school, then apply? A. The guidelines require that you're within three years of high school graduation and have never enrolled at a university. Enrolling at a Japanese university would end your eligibility.

Q. Is the scholarship taxed in the U.S.? A. U.S. university aid and aid paid from Japan may be treated differently. See the tax guide above and ask a tax professional.

Once you're living in the U.S., our guide to the US driver's license for F-1 soccer players covers getting around.

Summary

  • JASSO's degree-seeking scholarship doesn't have to be repaid, pays ¥352,000 a month for the U.S. (2026 actual), and can be combined with other aid.
  • Under NCAA rules, total aid can't exceed cost of attendance; any excess means the school cuts its aid. Report any award to the school.
  • You apply in September of 高3. For fall 2028 that's around September 2027, so put your realistic soccer schools in your top four choices.
  • The community college route doesn't qualify, and transferring during the award isn't allowed in principle.
  • The Yanai Foundation has a fixed school list, and Ivy League and Division III schools on it don't give athletic aid.
  • Choose a school for academic, soccer and budget fit, not for the name of the scholarship.
